Наконец Скарлетт появляется в его кабинете и спокойно говорит, что вот уже 6 недель как замужем за своим студентом – Отто Людвигом Пиффлем. Оба собираются переехать в Москву.Стараниями Макнамары русские арестовывают молодого человека по обвинению в шпионаже. После этого Макнамара узнает, что Скарлетт беременна. Теперь он должен во что бы то ни стало разыскать Пиффля. Для этого он использует очарование своей секретарши (и любовницы) Ингеборги. На нее положили глаз все 3 делегата, с которыми Макнамара готовится подписать экспортный договор. На бурной вечеринке Ингеборга танцует стриптиз на столе, а Макнамара обещает партнерам, что она отныне будет работать на них, если они помогут освободить Пиффля. Русские подчиняются, но в награду получают немецкого секретаря Макнамары, переодетого в платье Ингеборги.Макнамаре остается только преобразить Пиффля, чтобы начальник принял его за респектабельного человека. Он одевает его с ног до головы, организует его усыновление разорившимся графом и берет на работу в отдел бутилирования. Хэзелтайн так восхищен зятем, что немедленно назначает его главным по Европе. В прокате фильм провалился, что было крайне несправедливо. Без сомнения, в тот момент публика еще не была готова к такому безжалостному глумлению над идеологией, к такой вопиющей несерьезности. В эпоху фильмов-катастроф (в 70-е гг.) Билли Уайлдер, терпевший одну неудачу за другой, произнес: «Настоящие фильмы-катастрофы снимаю только я».
